Hibs and Selkirk set to honour Bobby Johnstone

The inaugural match will be contested every pre-season between the clubs to remember the 17-times capped forward.

Bobby began his career at his hometown club of Selkirk before moving to Easter Road, via a season-long spell at Newtongrange Star.

He is best remembered around Edinburgh for being part of the iconic Famous Five who terrorised defences up and down the country.

Moving south in 1955 Johnstone also earned cult status at Manchester City where he would become the player in history to score in successive FA Cup finals – a feat only equalled by Thierry Henry.

After relocating to Yarrow Park at the start of the 21st century, Selkirk named their new pavilion after Bobby.

And now, thanks to sponsorship from Selkirk Taxis, they will play each year for a trophy in his honour.

Selkirk manager Ian Fergus told us: “It’s very exciting to play Hibernian here.

“There is a lot of history between the clubs with Bobby Johnstone and I’m pleased he is being honoured with the introduction of this match.

“A lot of us grew up hearing stories about Bobby and it is a privilege for me to be part of the club where he began his career.”

Fergus himself was on the books with Hibs as a youngster.

While he didn’t follow the likes of John Collins and Eddie May into regular first team football, he still has a soft spot for the Easter Road club.

Ian added: “Hibs is a tremendous club and they have one of the best youth systems in the country.

“We will face a very good team next Sunday.”

Bobby’s daughter, Nicola, will be among the special guests who will attend Sunday’s memorial match.

Selkirk chairman Ross Anderson said: “We are busily compiling memorabilia from Bobby’s playing days so that we can have a permanent display at Yarrow Park.

“We are delighted Hibs are joining us to honour one of Scotland’s greatest players.”

The inaugural Bobby Johnstone Memorial match kicks off on Sunday at 3pm.
