Selkirk 0
Edusport Academy 3
THREE first half Edusport goals were enough to put Ian Fergus’ Selkirk to the sword on Saturday.
Strikes from Thomas Garnier, David Sinclair and Liam Coogans secured the three points at a very wet Yarrow Park.
But despite the defeat, returning gaffer Fergus was pleased with how the Souters performed.
He told the Border Telegraph: “The conditions did make the game difficult, but we did try to play football.
“It was three mistakes, three goals — that’s how I see it. I thought we were the better side for large parts of the game.
“We only had one substitute on the bench today which makes it very challenging, but I think we did really well on the mud even though we lost.
“It’s three points dropped but it was a good game considering what the conditions were like. We have to regroup now and hope we can get the rest of the games played because the pitch is in an awful state now.”
Selkirk started the game brightly with Jordan Hopkinson firing narrowly wide in the opening minutes.
But in the eighth minute it was the visitors who took the lead.
A scuffed clearance by keeper Gregor Amos fell to Garnier who looped his effort into the net.
And 11 minutes later they were two up. The referee awarded a soft free kick on the edge of the box, Sinclair stepped up and drilled it into the bottom corner — with the help of the post.
Most of the chances came from outside the penalty area, with Dale Baxter having a few good efforts.
But on the 30th minute Edusport struck again. The ball fell to Coogans around 20 yards out and he directed a stunning shot into the right-hand corner.
Selkirk stepped up their game in the second half. Hopkinson again came close.
The visitors were understandably content with their 3-0 lead and were happy to play on the break.
Garnier forced Amos into making two great saves within 10 minutes of each other.
And his counterpart Gaëtan Meny was also called into action a few moments later.
A Baxter corner was played out to Ross King, but his hard and low shot was tipped around the post by the 20-year-old Frenchman.
The Souters pushed forward to find a goal, but the visitors had the final chance of the afternoon.
Coogans drove down the right and got a shot off, but he was denied by the upright.
Selkirk are set to play Edinburgh University at Yarrow Park tomorrow.
Selkirk: G Amos, R Sclater, M Christie, D Healy, C Chalmers, J Hopkinson, P Addison (J Davidson 63), D Banjo, D Baxter, S McKirdy, R King.
